What to Expect During a Legal DNA Sample Collection

Welcome to AttoLife
, an independent UK-based DNA laboratory specialising in legal and court-admissible testing services. Whether you’re involved in a family law case, applying for a UK visa, or resolving questions of biological parentage, our collection process is designed with care, clarity, and legal compliance in mind.

This post explains what happens during a DNA collection visit involving two individuals—such as in a father-and-child relationship test.

A Dedicated Case Manager

From the outset, your case will be looked after by one of our experienced case managers. They will coordinate every stage of the process, including booking appointments and guiding you through the paperwork. You’ll always have a point of contact for any queries.

The Sampling Appointment

Your DNA sampling visit will be conducted by a trained AttoLife sampler who travels to each donor’s agreed location. This could be a home, workplace, solicitor’s office, or another secure environment.

Upon arrival, the sampler will identify themselves using an official AttoLife ID badge and introduce the process clearly. Their role includes answering any questions the donor may have about the sampling procedure and helping them feel at ease.

What the Donor Needs to Provide

To meet legal standards and ensure the results are admissible in court, each donor must:

  • Present valid photographic identification

  • Complete a consent form and case paperwork

  • Be willing to have a photograph taken to confirm their identity

Only after verifying the donor’s identity will the sampler proceed with taking the sample.

How the Sample Is Collected

The DNA sample is taken using sterile buccal swabs, which are gently rubbed inside the cheeks to collect cells. Two samples are collected from each individual to ensure reliability and accuracy.

Once collected, the swabs are:

  • Sealed securely in tamper-evident packaging

  • Labelled and signed off by both the donor and sampler

  • Photographed alongside the donor’s ID to confirm chain of custody

These steps are essential to maintaining the integrity of the sample and ensuring it holds up to scrutiny in legal settings.

What Happens Next?

The samples are delivered directly to our UKAS-accredited laboratory, where our scientific team conducts a rigorous DNA analysis. Results are typically available within 24 hours of sample receipt.

You will receive a comprehensive DNA report, which clearly states whether a biological relationship exists between the tested individuals. This document may be used in:

  • Inheritance disputes

  • Custody and family court proceedings

  • Immigration or nationality applications

Secure Tracking and Support

Every step of the process—from collection to reporting—is recorded securely in our system. You’ll be given access to check progress, and your case manager will remain available throughout.

If you have any questions about the process, or if you’re ready to begin a legal DNA test, please contact us at info@attolife.co.uk or call us on 020 3551 1486.
